How to Play High-Card Poker


In a game of poker, a winning hand is called a full house if it contains three of a kind and at least one pair. For example, if you hold the cards Q-Q-A-A, you have a full house. A pair and three of a kind break ties. A five-card straight beats a three-card royal flush. High-card poker is a more complex version of poker than Texas Hold’em.

There are several basic hand rankings, and you can play with as few as two players or as many as eight. The best starting hand is a pair of five cards. The highest-ranking hand wins. The first phase of a game of poker is called the pre-flop phase. Players place their bets and lay their cards out before the flop. The first three cards are known as community cards. Then, a player must reveal their hand. In a tournament, each player has two chances to win a hand. A player who wins a hand will receive the pot. While winning a hand will be challenging, it can also be rewarding if you have a good hand.
