Recent Developments in Conflict in the Middle East

Conflicts in the Middle East have been the focus of global attention for decades. Currently, recent developments show complex dynamics and various factors influencing the situation. The civil war in Syria is still continuing, although several areas have experienced de-escalation. Syrian government forces, backed by Russia and Iran, control most of the territory, but rebel groups and Islamic State remain active in some areas. In Yemen, the conflict between the internationally recognized government and the Iran-backed Houthis continues, causing a severe humanitarian crisis. Air strikes by the Saudi-led coalition remain frequent, and the blockade imposed on Yemen is exacerbating shortages of food and other basic needs. Meanwhile, in Gaza, tensions between Israel and Hamas have increased. Rocket attacks from Gaza into Israeli territory triggered a massive air response. Ceasefire negotiations remain fragile, despite efforts by international mediators to achieve lasting peace. From a political perspective, the normalization of relations between several Arab countries and Israel — through the Abraham Accords — is in the spotlight. However, this caused dissatisfaction among Palestinian groups and intensified protests in the occupied territories. In this context, Palestine’s position is increasingly marginalized in broader discussions about regional security and stability. Iran continues to play a significant role in these conflicts, strengthening the position of its allied groups in countries such as Lebanon and Iraq. Meanwhile, the US remains in a tricky position, with efforts to reduce its military presence in the region, but still provide support to its allies, such as Israel and Saudi Arabia. Changes in the political climate in Türkiye also have an impact on the situation in the Middle East. Ankara shows a strong interest in expanding its influence, participating in the conflict in Syria, as well as bilateral relations with the Gulf countries and Hamas. Türkiye seeks to strengthen its strategic position through an active foreign policy. In a social context, civil society in various Middle Eastern countries is increasingly daring to speak out against their governments, seeking reform and change. The protest movement in Iran, for women’s rights and against corruption, is one example of confrontation that has attracted world attention. With all these developments, the future of the Middle East remains highly uncertain. The international community continues to seek peaceful solutions, but complex and long-standing challenges make this process difficult. This situation requires continuous attention, because the impact is not only felt in the region but also globally.
