Casino is the eighth collaboration between director Martin Scorsese and star Robert De Niro. The film is loosely based on the life of Sam “Ace” Rothstein, a Jewish American gambling expert who was hired by the Chicago Outfit to oversee day-to-day operations at the Tangiers Casino in Las Vegas. The movie also features mobster Nicky Santoro and streetwise chip hustler Ginger McKenna.

A slick, fast-paced thriller, Casino never lags, even at a lengthy three hours. The masterful editing and taut narration keep the action moving, and Scorsese uses music to set the tone throughout the film. For a film depicting vice, there is a surprising amount of poignancy at the end. As the credits roll, Ace laments that Las Vegas no longer looks like this and wonders what will replace it.
